CAORLE
Caorle is an ancient town whose origin dates back to the Roman Empire and it is one of the most important beaches in Italy. It is in the North of Italy, in the province of Venice. Its beach is mainly made up of a large expanse of fine and golden sand. The historical city centre at the heart of the city has its main attraction in the old harbour, starting point of a great number of calli leading to many campielli, to the main street Rio Tera' and the old Cathedral.
The beautiful sea promenade is an open air gallery hosting the biennal International Festival "Scogliera Viva", when sculptors from all around the world shape the rocks of the waterfront to create artworks along the whole promenade ending at the Sanctuary of Madonna dell'Angelo.
Caorle is not just the beach and the sea. The lagoon is a very important natural resource for the city: it still hosts the tipycal fishermen's huts called casòni built of wood and reeds.
These places were also attended by American writer Ernest Hemingway when he was guest of Baron Franchetti: in this corner of wild nature the writer got his inspiration for his novel 'Across the River and Into the Trees', a wonderful description of the lagoonal landscape during the winter.
